Low, Mid or High Fade: Which One Should You Ask For?
A fade is a haircut where the hair gets shorter as it goes down the sides and back of the head. The name of the fade tells your barber where that change starts. Knowing the difference helps you get the cut you have in mind.
Here is how our barbers in Woodside explain it to clients in the chair.

Low fade
The short part starts just above the ears and follows the hairline around the back. It keeps more length on the sides, so it looks clean but not dramatic. A good first fade, and an easy choice for work.
Mid fade
The change starts around the temples, halfway up the side of the head. It is the most popular choice: more contrast than a low fade, without taking off too much. It goes well with a textured crop, a side part or curls on top.
High fade
The short part goes up to around the top corner of the head, so the sides are very short and the top stands out. It has a bold, sharp look and works well with short tops and high-contrast styles.
Skin fade (bald fade)
Any fade, low, mid or high, can go down to the skin at the bottom. Ask for a skin or bald fade if you want it to blend from skin to hair. Ask for a fade "with a guard" if you prefer to keep a little shadow.
Taper
A taper only shortens the hair at the sideburns and the neckline, and leaves the rest of the sides longer. It is the most natural option and grows out the softest.
How to ask for it
Tell your barber the type of fade, how short you want the bottom (skin or a guard number) and what you want on top. A photo of a cut you like always helps. Our barbers will also tell you what suits your hair type and head shape.
How often to touch it up
Fades look their sharpest for about two weeks. Most clients come back every two to three weeks; a taper can go three to four.
